  I have been getting my haircut at Melvin's barber shop for several years. I have always received a good hair cut there. However, lately, the customer service has gone steadily down hill fast. Because I have been going there for awhile, I am fully aware that the shop has a strong Puerto Rican customer base and atmosphere, It was never a problem for me for years, but in the last few visits I feel more and more like an intruder than a welcome customer. I am a middle-aged white male with blond hair and blue eyes that speaks English and some French but no Spanish. My last haircut was given by a barber that spoke no English and every instruction I wished to communicate to the barber had to be translated through a second barber, Today, when I entered the shop my greeting was "Ready?". Today's barber I had never seen before, much less had my hair cut by him. The barber asked not a question or spoke a word to me and simply proceeded to start cutting my hair. I knew immediately he was not using the blade I wanted on the razor. I literally had to stop the man and proceeded to tell him how I wished my hair to be cut. The barber followed my instructions but did not speak to me what-so-ever after that. He had plenty to say and laugh about with his co-workers and other men just sitting around the shop, for no apparent reason, all in Spanish. He stopped to flick through channels on the TV without so much as a "pardon me". The only way I knew he was finished was by his removing the drape. He held no mirror for me to look at the back of my head. He did not ask if the cut was to my satisfaction. He did say "thank you" when I handed him money. He failed to say "here's my card", or "please come again" or "go to hell you English-speaking white bastard". Again, great haircuts, but from now on I will be going someplace where I feel like my business is appreciated -- even if with nothing more that a "how are you today?" I'm not Puerto Rican but I am a human being!!
